Paddling

I behaved wrongly in a public junior high school in the late 70's and was swatted twice with a big, mean looking paddle, by a big, mean looking principle in a rather glum office.
Funny, I was never so inclined to pursue that avenue of disruption again and my delicate ego has not been damaged by that act of brutality unto this day.
As a matter of fact, I would rather submit to that kind of discipline than to be hewed down verbally in front of 30 students, which also happened to me by a rather sarcastic teacher.
Thou knowest not what thou speakest of in regards to corporal punishment, oh intellectual genius. Looking at the crime rates on high school campi, maybe there needs to be more of that bad ol' corporal punishment.

I hear you but the cycle of beating still needs to be broken. It truly solves nothing.

Admissions tests

Is one test harder than the other? Do students perform better on one over the other? Given a choice, which would you have a 7th grader take for admission into private school at grade 8?

The choice is not ours. You take whatever test the school requires!

CAN I REGISTER A PRIVATE SCHOOL/COLLEGE HERE IN USA AND OFFER THE COURSE/CLASS IN ANOTHER COUNTRY. IS IT A MUST TO HAVE A FUNCTIONING SCHOOL HERE IN USA AS WELL AS IN THE FOREIGN COUNTRY.

Best advice: seek a legal opinion.

Foreign Teachers

A matured filipino teacher would like to volunteer at no cost on the part of the school to teach language and reading. Allowance for food and housing will suffice. Holder of Masters degree in Teaching. Taught children in the different educational levels from elementary to college students. Holder of a US visa valid till 2009.

A foreigner must possess a 'Green Card' even to volunteer in the United States.

Uncertified Teachers

"I will be looking for a teacher's aide position in an elementary school age classroom this coming fall in the Wasilla, Alaska area. I have worked for the State of Alaska for 20 years and am retiring the first of July. I will be moving from Anchorage, Alaska to Wasilla, Alaska in July.

It's my dream to work with children. I am a mother and grandmother but have no other certifications or experience in this area. Can you direct me to the proper person to contact for information about openings in this area?"

Teacher certification requirements for private schools vary from state to state. As a general rule, private schools look for individuals who are passionate about their subject. For example, a degree in physics without teacher certification will catch my attention more than a general education degree. The physics degree tells me that the candidate has followed a rigorous program of courses in order to earn that degree. The education degree unfortunately is too superficial to allow in depth study of any one subject area. For more of my thoughts, read Do You Have To Be Certified?

Daycare vs Preschool

I have a 3 year old and currently have her enrolled in a very expensive daycare. I am feeling like I am paying a lot for teacher turnover and want her to be in an environment where there is more of an academic curriculum (or, as much as you can at the age of 3!!). I would like to enroll her in the Fall at a preschool and have been visiting some schools. Do you think it's absurd to pay $12k for a private school at 3 days a week for a 3.5 year old??? I am struggling with the right answer! She is definitely enjoying the daycare that she is currently attending, but my rationale is that if I’m going to pay a lot for daycare, I might as well look for a preschool!

Read my take on such questions in Early Education Options. I assume that you cannot be with your child due to work or travel requirements, right? If so, you need to find the best substitute for a parent's nurturing. It WILL cost plenty.

Help with Toronto Schools

Can you help? We are Canadians who are currently living in Hong Kong and attending a fantastic IB private school. We plan to return to Toronto in a year or two. How can we help ensure our children get places at a good school, preferably with an IB program in case we move internationally again? Also, I'm a teacher. I want to ask the schools if I teach at a school will my children receive a discounted tuition, but I don't want to sound tacky in asking that before I even apply to have them attend the school.

Their entrance would not be dependent on my working, but it'd be helpful to know. Could I research this without having to ask directly? Thanks!

My advice is simple: use whatever network you have in place to secure a place at the school you desire.

Once that is done, worry about the teaching position. I have a hunch both will work out satisfactorily. Good teachers are always in demand! Ontario Private Schools

Latin Translation

Sorry about this as you might find it a trifle cheeky. I hope you could help me translate from English to Latin the following sentence

'He walks away'

Sorry to ask, I wish my school had offered the choice of learning classic Latin, sadly this was not the case.
