Discuss Cutting Openly

Cutting is just like all the other issues which we adults must cope with when raising or looking after young people. It's an issue which must be discussed openly and honestly. It's exactly like substance abuse or sex or AIDS or any other issue teens face. Lay out the facts briefly and impartially. Show the resources which are available for help and treament. Never be judgmental or flip when discussing issues like cutting. A child who's hurting needs love and support from the adults around her. This is particularly true in the boarding school setting where faculty and staff function in loco parentis
